This may throw a wrench into your dispute, but I say it differently depending on which part of speech it is: "car-mul" if used as an adjective as in caramel corn, and "care-a-mel" if used as a noun as in layers of delicious caramel. I also vary depending on how hoity-toity I wish to sound. . .
